Characteristics and Causes
Oily skin occurs when the small oil glands in the skin become overactive and secrete too much oil. An overabundance of skin oil can lead to clogged pores, blackheads and breakouts (spots).
Some typical symptoms of oily skin are:
Oily shine to the skin
Coarser, thicker skin texture
While oily skin may be inherited there are common causes that could be fuelling the condition.
Over cleaning the skin: Believe it or not you can cleanse your skin too often. Cleansing morning and evening is the ideal number of times.
Strong astringents: Astringent toners with high alcohol content may also strip oil from the skin but also remove moisture. Over stripping the skin can have a re-bound effect and the skin will produce more oil to compensate.
Correct moisturising: Rich, nourishing moisturising creams are sometimes used which could clog and block the pores. A light moisturizer such as a lotion rather than a cream will be adequate to prevent moisture loss from occurring in the skin.
